I returned the Johnston and Murphy's I had just purchased after these arrived and I could compare them side by side. Actually when they sat on the counter, we all thought the J&M had the edge cosmetically, but once on the feet everybody agreed the Allen Edmounds just looked classier. I've been working through the break-in period, but really can't say that I've had any issues with comfort during a normal day. I probably wouldn't wear these to travel until they've seen a lot more miles however. Overall I'm very pleased.Update - after six months of wearing these shoes I'm very pleased with the way they've held up and how comfortable they are. I have pronounced ankle bones which are often an issue, no problem with these. 'd recommend these to anybody looking for a great shoe.18 month update - these remain my favorite shoes. They've held up exceptionally well with just occasional polishing.
Allen Edmonds is the great American shoe company and these shoes are a testament to fine American craftsmanship. Wearing them takes you back in time to a time when men dressed like men. When you shaved with a straight razor and put on a suit every morning for work. The leather soles quietly click beneath you and the cork inner soles conforms perfectly to your feet providing the utmost in comfort. These shoes remind me of a time gone by when every man wore leather shoes and had a polishing kit to take care of his investment. You don't throw these out like a thrashed pair of sneakers when the sole is worn, you have them recrafted and wear them for another five years then wear them and repeat. If you appreciate true, American made quality buy a pair, you will love the feeling of becoming an Allen Edmonds man. Just be warned, you will become addicted. Since buying this pair of AE shoes I have bought 15 more pair and now I refuse to wear anything else. They feel so good you will throw away your sneakers and start dressing much nicer on a daily basis.
I can hear it now. Who pays three hundred dollars for a pair of men's shoes? Let me put it this way. You don't mind paying good money for a quality product. What I don't appreciate is paying good money for something that turns out to be crap! You don't mind paying for something if you are getting your money's worth, or as some say, you get what you pay for...well I have to say, that when I dress up, and I put on these shoes, I look so good, I feel "...too damp to burn!" This is probably one of the best investments in myself that I have ever made...These shoes are so well made, and of such quality, that they even come with shoe bags! (An Allen Edmonds tradition)and if they ever wear out, as eventually they will, all you have to do is send them back to the company and they will replace the heel and resole them for you, so that you can continue to enjoy their comfort and splendor...you might even want to bequeath them you your sons in the will...they are so fantastic, they will be fighting over them when you're gone!
I have come to learn after some internet research that Allen Edmonds are typically narrow in construction. So after I returned this product, I ordered the next wider size from Zappo's as they weren't available here, and they were still too narrow. I was also dismayed by the poor quality of the leather and workmanship which do not justify a steep $395.00 price tag. Supposedly AE does not have a quality control department; quality is adjusted according to customer feed back and returns. Let's see if my two returns create an uptick in that area.
Shoe runs half size large. This shoe fits me perfect at 9D. My foot is a true 9.5D. I wear a 9.5D in Cole Haan (with dress socks): Lunargrand (12 pairs), Hudson Penny Loafer and Hudson Bit Loafer. My Converse shoe size is 9D (with dress socks) in canvas and leather. Other Allen Edmonds shoes that fit me in 9D: Strand, Neumok, Franciscan and McTavish. The leather is thick and high quality. Use Allen Edmonds' shoe polish for best results. The walnut is my favorite color. I use the McAllister (in carnauba high polish) with slacks and the Strand (in normal shine shoe cream) with dark jeans. Both look great, a very versatile shoe and a great addition to anyone's wardrobe.Collection consists of 10+ pairs of Allen Edmonds.
Sizing for this shoe is a little off... like another reviewer, I wear either 9.5 or 10 in Nike, but the 8.5 fit perfectly. The McTavish that fits me is a size 9. Not sure why the sizing is off, especially since the Allen Edmonds McTavish is pretty much a version of this in softer leather.I got these in Walnut along with the matching Manistee belt. First day I wore these to the office, I got load of compliments. I wore them with a suit, but these shoes look great with a pair of chinos or even some jeans. The leather is great quality. I didn't need to break them in at all. The price on these may seem expensive, but this is a shoe you can resole for a few bucks and it should last a lifetime with proper care.
These Allen Edmonds McAllister shoes were on sale for a short time, I believe because Nordstrom had its Anniversary Sale (30% off), ordered them here using AE's guide but they were too big and too narrow. By the time I had received and tried them on and went back to reorder the size I was going to they were no longer available in my size so I bought them from Nordstrom this time with sales tax. If you're not 100% sure of your size and can afford it order more than one size and return what doesn't fit... Oh, on the McAllisters themselves, quality appears top end, they were very comfortable when trying them on, time will tell... I'll update later...
Since my first pair was used my feet started to hurt and I had to get new ones. When I found out a new pair was $300 I was surprised, my thrift store pair was only $8. But even then they were the best shoes I ever wore so when needing a fresh pair I knew it was worth it. Bought my first brand new pair and I'm glad I did.Update:A few weeks later and I've got them broken in. Best shoes ever. I've got another pair in my cart just so I can order a back-up pair whenever they go on sale.
