Mephisto Men's Match Sneaker, Taupe Combo Nubuck, 9.5 Review

These are the very best walking shoes I have ever owned. They are heavier than the cloth mesh waking shoes available, but a little more weight is not an issue for walking. They are very supportive and comfortable. My feet, ankles and legs do not hurt when I wear these shoes. Thay intentionally fit looser than most shoes, which I discovered was an advantage in comfort and heat reduction. I bought a different style Memphisto shoe in the mid 80's, have had them refurbished twice and they are still comfortable and fit well. All of the other walking/running shoes I have purchased since I bought my first pair of Memphisto's have on average lasted about 6 months. Lot of difference in 39 years and six months. I believe the Match shoes will be just as serviceable. These are simply a great shoe for walking or standing all day. Well worth carrying a little extra weight to achieve the comfort and serviceability of these shoes. I strongly recommend you try them for awhile so you can smile like I smile. This is not a commercial. I am simply tired of expensive mesh shoes that do not hold up and offer nowhere near the comfort. If you are a runner, these shoes are not for you, unless you are simply looking for a comfortable day to day shoe for work of just ambling around. One last thing. I wear a size 11 shoe, but ordered these in a 10.5 and they are perfect. They also come in wide sizes, but are already a little wide. Once you lock onto "your size" you'll be hooked.

As has often been my experience when purchasing shoes, the size that fits is unpredictable. Such was the case with this shoe. It was my first time purchasing this shoe. I've wanted a pair for quite some time and I was pleasantly surprised to see it discounted over 40% a little while ago and decided that it was now or never. I ordered size 10. It was immediately apparent that my size in this model was actually a half-size lower, so I immediately requested an exchange. Amazon makes this easy and, even though the price had gone up substantially, I wasn't charged the difference. I received size 9 1/2 a couple of days ago and immediately started wearing them. The fit is perfect and the experience I've had thus far exceeds my expectations. They are comfortable yet afford me with exceptional support. I've read other reviews that describe this shoe as being on the heavy side. Possibly, however I will say that, in my opinion, any shoe that affords the degree of comfort and support this one does will have what I would term a "substantial presence." I do not find it to be excessively heavy and my feet do not fatigue with extended wear. Although I've only had it for a couple of days, I can already envision this shoe to be a favorite. I almost wish I'd purchased 2 pair at the price I paid. I'd recommend this shoe to anyone wishing an upscale look that offers great support and comfort. I watched the price fluctuate in my shopping cart under "Saved for Later" for several months before I finally went for it. I've only seen it offered lower once (27 cents), so I bought as close to the bottom as possible in my opinion. Possibly you can do as well if you're patient.

The shoe fit exactly as expected. They are comfortable and are a solid product.

Do not be fooled by the high price. Mephisto men's walking shoes will outlast you. They are the most comforable shoes I have worn. I walk regularly for exercise and am now in my 70's. These shoes have great cushioning. They are attractive enough to wear almost anywhere. The sizing has worked well, even for my short, wide feet.

Sizing is kind of weird as Mephisto's EU size conversion to US sizes is a whole size off by many other brands. Going by EU sizing, the length is about right bordering on slightly smaller than the label. Width wise is great, except of the toe box. The toe box is extremely narrow and your small toe will be cramped against the side. If you size up half EU size, it think it might work but you might experience heel slippage depending on your foot shape. Sizing up EU size by half size is sizing down half size in typical US sizes (since Mephisto's conversion is different). I wonder if the people saying it ran large might be going off their typical US size.Comfort: These are extremely comfortable shoes if it fits you. Only potential problem would be overheating as it is made of thick, full grain leather. No break in time needed.Quality: It is made of quality material and you can easily tell. They look much better in person than in pictures in my opinion.Price: It is extremely expensive for a pair of "sneakers" but they can be resoled and refreshed by Mephisto. From what I have heard about this process, it will come back looking pretty much new, espeically since the top is made of full grain leather. If you break down the down over time, it might actaully become cheaper than buying multiple cheaper shoes over the years. So if you are the type of person that likes to wear the same shoes and would just buy the same model again when the time comes, this might be for you (as long as it fits your feet).

This is my third pair of Mephisto shoes - the second pair of Match. I have a dark brown vintage leather Match and a tumbled black leather Match. Without a doubt, for me, the Match is the best walking shoe on the market. I have read some of the reviews commenting on the insoles, the workmanship, the materials, and the cost. I have also tried several other brands and models. Simply stated, the Mephisto Match is well worth the investment. I live in New York City and walk quite a bit and had been searching for a shoe that has a comfortable foot bed, a durable outsole, a sensible utilitarian design, and sufficient support to minimize joint and back discomfort. While there are plenty of manufacturers that offer great products, no one brand is best for every size and shape foot or person or physique. The bottom line for me is that I HIGHLY recommend the Mephisto Match to anyone who simply wants to be comfortable day in and day out.
