Walking the dog daily through dewy grass, puddles, and the occasional slippery crossing of shallow streams without ending up experiencing wet toes is my quest. I have purchased enough "waterproof" shoes that I realize water soundness does not last forever; however, I do expect at least a year of moderate use and dry feet to consider the shoes "waterproof" (i.e. I will gladly purchase a new pair of shoes yearly to guarantee dry feet). I am a big supporter of Merrel shoes overall, with the Men's Moeb II being very water tight, but I have experienced severe issues with poor traction on round rocks especially when shoe bottoms or rocks are wet. When my Merrels wore out, I recently tried a pair of Columbia Redmond V2 Mid Waterproof which was initially waterproof and had improved traction on slippery rocks; however, after only 3 months of very moderate use I experienced significant issues with wet feet just walking through dewy grass. They offered me merchandise credit if I return them, which I will do at my shipping cost. I researched other brands and found these Salomon shoes with decent reviews and aggressive looking traction. I normally buy a 11 wide, but there were no wide options so I tried the 11 but had to exchange for a 11.5 due to pinching just behind my toes. These fit a little tight on one foot but since the insole could be removed to free up room as a last resort, I decided to keep them and hope they wear-in. After only one use, my foot felt comfortable walking and within a few days they were a perfect fit. The attached picture shows shoes in a shallow stream with toecaps submerged but not coming over the bootie. No water penetration and even the outer material didn't seem to saturate with water like the Columbia shoes did. The wet traction was noticeably improved over previous brands I have tried but of course slippery rocks remain slippery. The aggressive traction is very good on hilly trails with loose rocks/pebbles. Also noteworthy, I purchased "used like-new" for a significant savings which I try to do whenever I can to reduce costs (depending on the product and potential for it being resold with a flaw not identified in the prior-return process). With only a short amount of usage so far, these shoes check all the boxes for me, and if nothing changes, I will certainly plan to repurchase when the need arises.
These are incredible shoes for the price. They are a decent weight for trail hiking shoes, the waterproofing has been put to the test on multiple occasions and worked wonderfully, the tread almost looks like car tire tread so you don't have to worry about slips or falls, and the inners are very comfortable. The only major downside I've seen is if you have wider feet. These do fit true to size length wise, but aren't great for wider feet. You'll have to size up half a size to make them comfortable width wise and deal with the extended toe box. If that isn't an issue for you these are an absolute must add to your footwear rotation.
Good looking shoe. Nice durable laces and full gusseted tounge. Great support too.Got these and wore around locally for a few days.Today I wore to work and walked 7 miles.Toe box is a little tight and had to clip a toe nail because it was rubbing. After today's 7 miles, toe box has loosened and feeling more comfortable.I will write again when I get to the waterproof testingUpdate: I have over 100 miles on these in 2 weeks. Replaced the insole but couldn't wear a heavy sock.Toe box is still tight and hurt my toes.Sending these back SADLY
Great sport shoes for walking in all surfaces with confidence.
The quality of the shoes is really high. They are quite strong and comfortable at the same time.
I’m a mobile dog groomer and these are very beneficial. I’ve been using them 5 days a week for over 3 weeks now with never having my feet getting wet. Pleasantly surprised. Toe box is not to narrow as I’ve been wearing thicker sock in 30 degree TN weather. I normally wear 9-9.5. Went with size 9 as the EU size was 40.5 which is something to consider when buying this brand. Would buy again.
Very comfortable and supportive shoes. I can wear these all day and not have tired feet at the end of the day.
I bought these shoes because they look very similar to the X Ultra Version 3 model. They are very similar in everything except the lacing system and a very important difference is the insole, the quality leaves a lot to be desired. I found myself having to use the insoles from the other shoes. I share the photos of the Salomon X Ultra Pioneer shoes with the reference Salomon X Ultra 3.
