Light hikers...

Best hiking boots ever! I broke my ankle on both sides. I am fully recovered and these hiking boots are super comfortable and protect my ankle from another injury while on the trail.

Extremely comfortable -- like a high-top running shoe. Great for 2 weeks of hiking in Greece

I do not really like heavy duty hiking boots. I grew up with that model. But you spend 10 years breaking them in and then they have broken down! Think of all the blisters and rub spots. Ouch! These came out of the box and on to my feet for a 2 week island-hopping trip in Greece. So comfortable (and relatively better looking than other hiking shoes) that I ended up wearing them for almost everything but my beach time. I wore them with casual skirts to dinner in those hilly cities! Wore them around Athens! Think Hokas with high tops.

They've cheapened the shoe.

What have they done to my Altras? 1) cheap shoelaces. These break. 2) no metal lacing quick "releases" - you have to thread the laces all the way up -- they've cheapened it. 3) NARROWER TOE BOX -- Altras have always let your toes spread out to "grip" the trail. Are they trying to look "cute"? 4) Although I always get another shoe arch support, the ones these come with don't even a back of heel lift.I'll spend to get the features I want. Now what am I going to do to get a flat (heel to toe) shoe? I may have to get the men's. I want the features!

Great Shoe with Caveats

This is my fourth pair of Altra hiking "boots." My previous three pairs were the Lone Peak 4s, and they were the best hiking shoe of my (long) life. I've got all kinds of foot issues, the worst of which is arthritis on the top of one foot. I need a zero-drop shoe and a wide toe box. The lone peak 4s were the most comfortable shoe I've ever hiked in and they kept my after-hiking pain to a minimum. I couldn't wear them in the snow or in wet conditions though, because the Altras are only water resistant, not water proof.I was bummed at their discontinuance, but splurged on this iteration of the original. They are very comfortable, but there are some issues I've discovered after hiking quite a few times in them. Still, they are the most pain-free boots I own (I've got Vasque and Asolo boots as well). The grip on the sole is much improved too. Anyway, here are the things to consider:* You'll have to buy more quality laces. The ones that come with the boots are thin, cheap, and easily broken.* It's very difficult to get your foot in the boot unless you unlace them fairly far down the tongue area. I use a long metal shoehorn, but I'm not going to be bringing a shoehorn for an overnight backpack. Total pain in the rear.* This boot seems to cover more of the ankle area than the 4s, and it's stiff. I'm okay with it, but I am definitely hoping that it'll soften over time.

Received 2 different sized shoes!

I really do love these shoes, but after a couple of hikes, my left foot seemed to slide around in the shoe. Upon closer inspection, I saw I had been sent one size 8 shoe (right- what I had ordered) and one size 8 1/2 shoe (left)!!! It was past the return date, so I had to buy another pair, sadly. So double check them!

Design flaws.

Where you normally have a leather tab/loop to help pull on boots, the placement of the ‘stretchy’ rubber band like loop is one; too stretchy and too low on the heel. Also, cheapest shoestrings. I sent them back.
