Sperry Men's Gold Boat ASV Boat Shoe, Amaretto, 9.5 Review

So, I just got them and wore them for the first time out and about. The have some nice cushion to the bottom of the inside and were quite nice when standing, yet not spongy when walking. These are very nice looking, especially after a nice clear shoe wax and shine. They should last for many years. A cheaper shoe of this similar style lasted for almost 8 years with regular almost daily use. These should last much longer. I wish I had known about Sperry before I bought the other brand as the other brand made my feet hurt after wearing them. The Sperry men’s gold boat shoes are completely in another, professional, league compared to the other brand. These fit nice, real nice, even though I am between an 8 and an 8.5 size. That being said I do consider as they break in they might become a little loose or they may not break in as well as they should, that’s not a complaint they feel great now. I mention this only because I bought them at a size that was about a quarter size too big. Being the great leather that they are, maybe I should have bought the 1/4 size down and let them break in and be the glove like fit I’m sure they would be. Again they feel and fit great now. The leather is firm yet supple, if I can say that. Maybe they don’t need to break in at all. I bought a pair of cowboy boots about 25 years ago and they were very tight and hurt for awhile, but when they broke in they fit like a glove. However that took awhile. That’s what I’m comparing the break in story to. These don’t hurt and already fit very comfortably. I like how they fit 100%. As a matter of fact, they fit so well I do have to untie them to get them on and off. Again, It’s not that they fit so tight they feel uncomfortable. They won’t just slip on or off. For me this is a double edged sword. I love how well they fit. I don’t want to ruin the back of the shoe if they did slip on and off, but I do wish they fit this well and I could slip them on and off. As an overweight older man, not old, older, I would say mature but my wife might differ from that opinion LOL, okay back to the review, it is much easier to slip shoes on and off with a shoe horn rather than bending over and tying or untying to put them on or to take them off. Still worth it, besides each time I do it’s then that I remember, I don’t need those extra cookies at night. LOL. Another thought that comes to mind, as nothing is perfect, are the laces. When I tie them I can never get the loops to go left and right instead of one pointing towards my toe and the other at my ankle, or we’ll kinda angled if you will. So, I’m sure there is a way to do that, but I don’t know how to while they are on my feet and it’s me tying them. LOL I do try to tuck the laces in at the sides to hide the bow. Remember they fit very well and the laces wont fit in there. My pants do cover them though, so they aren’t too long. If I bend my leg up they will sometimes show a little. I don’t wear skinny jeans, but someone might and they would probably show. I’m not saying the laces look bad, but I prefer them not to show at all. That is why I picked the two eye lace shoes instead of the ones with three eyes on each side. I might not mind so much if the laces were one solid color but they are dyed blackish on the top and bottom and brown leather on the sides. But again they don’t look bad…….it’s just not my preference to have them show. So maybe a thinner lace or one that lays flatter than a twisting leather look.I was concerned about getting such an expensive shoe through online ordering. However, with Amazon Prime and try before you buy and the ability to return them after 7 days before I actually paid for them……..I did try them and they are worth every single penney. Although I only walked on carpet before I actually decided to keep them. Now I have worn them out and they are so nice, so comfortable to walk and stand in.So in closing, 99% perfect for me. I wish the laces were a bit different, though I don’t know how to solve that, maybe I can find a different type or a solid color. My wife likes them just fine. So it is a personal preference. And 99% because I have to tie and untie them to get them on and off and me being overweight isn’t any fault from the manufacturer.In my opinion if your looking for an awesome shoe that fits well, is well made and looks great, my wife agrees, and are very very comfortable to stank and walk in…… spend the money….. they are worth it. You won’t be disappointed.Randy

First impressions just out of the box. Appears to be well made and substantial show while still being light in weight. Gold cup is among the top of the line from Sperry. Immediately felt comfortable. Nice soft lining. DOesn't feel like it needs much of a break-in as others have said it does. Also, absolutely no danger of the metal emblem on the sole scratching anything as it is well into the arch. I did order 1/2 size up from my previous Sperry shoes and they fit perfect, so they may run slightly small. Overall, highly recommended, but not at full retail.

I have been wearing topsiders for 5 decades. I have several pairs for different activities. I wear these as a casual dress shoe. Yeah, I go on boats with them, but you are more likely to see me in a country club or restaurant with these. When I go offshore fishing, I wear other models (billfish mainly) but these are for a night out while living the nautical lifestyle. They look great and feel good. Topsiders are not the most comfortable shoe in the world, but they fit well and are pretty comfortable for boat shoes.5 stars

I will review Sperry Top-Sider Mens Gold Cup Series Boat Shoes by comparing them to the Original Sperry Top-Siders.The originals, once they are broken in and have been washed or soaked once, become a second skin that you forget about, and they can keep you as cool as a pair of flip-flops due to the rough grain of the leather inside. However, walking in the originals for any distance is very tiring because there is little or no impact absorption in the original sole.That is why I bought the Gold Cups, I wanted approximately the same look except be able to stand and walk for hours without getting aching tired feet and without feeling every twig and pebble on the street.In this respect, the Gold Cups are indeed better, comparable in fact to wearing sneakers and socks in terms of comfort. And for this reason they are worth the extra money.But there are some aspects of the originals that I prefer over the Gold Cups. Originals terminate lower on the instep so more of the foot is exposed, and they are of course more shallow and somehow look smaller. They have a timeless cool look about them, whether worn with shorts or jeans.The Gold Cup look very similar, but the walking sole and longer upper do make them look a bit more conservative when you see them side by side with originals. Not so bad as to make them an old man’s shoe like certain other Sperrys, but they are clearly not quite as cool looking as the originals.One of the advantages of the Gold Cups is also their disadvantage. The beautiful soft hide interior with the memory foam underneath can stick to damp feet. And feet will get damp on their own if you are walking around on a hot day. On a boat of course there is a good chance that the ocean or the lake will soak the shoes at some point, with a similar effect. In originals, the insole is the rough side of the hide and less prone to sticking to the sole of your foot.This review is a little premature because I have not yet washed my Gold Cups. Top-Siders are worn without socks and feet are, well, feet. So owners of Top-Siders wash their shoes, or they should anyway. Originals come out like new after a cold soapy bath and rinse, and dry in an hour in front of a cool room fan. No harm done, and then all you smell inside is new leather. I will suspect that the Gold Cups with their memory foam and their deerskin insides may not dry quite as fast after a wash, but then as I say, I do not know yet. Perhaps I will update this review after I give them their first wash.Lastly, Gold Cups come in different widths so if you are, for example, a 9.5 wide, you do not need to compromise and buy a 10 medium. You can get a proper fitting shoe.

I love these shoes because they are very comfortable, but I am not sure of the quality. I have thrown two pairs away because the glue holding the sole to the leather upper FAILED. The leather upper and laces still looked as good as new. The Chinese manufacturer used by Sperry maintained the comfort but blew the glue!

This is my second pair of Gold Cup boat shoes. I purchased my first pair about ten years ago, and decided to buy a new pair as the cost of replacing the soles was prohibitive. They have held up well, and I expect these will, too.

Met a guy on our cruise that had this exact shoe. Had to have them. Super comfortable.
