The heel has a firm surround (I use a shoehorn to preserve it's shape) and nicely beveled sole for driving comfort. I've started using this loafer when flying my airplane. It does a great job dampening in-flight floor vibration and reduces fatigue. This is a very fine casual shoe.

I liked these shoes very much, but they were too narrow for my feet. My feet aren't particularly wide. For the right person I think these are nice shoes, just be aware they are a narrow cut.
