This is a beautiful shoe, as well made as you'd expect from Johnston & Murphy. Oddly, it's a half size too small. I wear a 10, and while other size 10 J&M shoes fit me just fine, I had to go to 10.5 with this one.
These did not disappoint. They look amazing, they're easy to wear all day, and even in our Maine winter when I've had to walk out to my car in the snow I don't slip and slide. They're great for when you need to look good but also deal with rain or snow. The inside is soft and comfortable, excellent support, and they feel very easy to walk in. With my job as a sysadmin I sometimes have to stand at a server rack for hours, and in these shoes that was easy.I wear a size 9 on my right foot and an 8.5 on my left, and I bought the US size 9 of these and it fits perfectly. My left foot still feels comfortable in the slightly larger shoe. Now, I do have some small complaints. The leather is a bit firm when you first get them, and even after the amount of time I've had these, there are some areas that really haven't softened up. Particularly up around my ankle, the backstay and heel counter area, it's very course still.Take this critical part with some grain of salt, I was and am used to the older, hand made Johnston & Murphy shoes, which tended to be far higher quality than these. I still have a pair I purchased in 2006 which are still amazing, though they did need a bit of attention from a cobbler about a year ago. These are classically handsome boots. Highly recommend.
The first pair I had I wore for 2 days and the top speed eyelet pulled right out of the boot. This happened while just sitting not tying the boots. I moved my foot and felt my shoe laces go loose. I looked at the boots and the eyelet pulled out of the boot. I returned these as defective and received a new pair. So far so good but I haven’t worn them much for the holidays. These were purchased for work. I think j and m should do away with these speed lace eyelets all together. They make it much harder to tie the boot. When your trying to tie the boot the laces come out of the speed eyelets on top frequently and it does become frustrating. The eyelets are a bad design for that reason. They need updated or removed completely. I will keep you posted on the second pair as I wear them.
